The Clear graphics format was 'invented' by John Kortink for his !Translatr graphics translation program; at the time Acorn sprites were not able to handle more than 8 bits per pixel, and so some way had to be found of handling pictures from other formats that might have as many as 24 bits per pixel without losing any of the quality. It is now accepted as a sort of unofficial Acorn standard, as many high-end graphics packages on the Archimedes / RiscPC range now use it.
