The PackdDir archive format was 'invented' by John Kortink for his same-named compression program; The compression rate is not impressive by nowadays standards, but it can be an alternative to a gzipped tar file (compression speed is much higher with PackDir because of carefully-designed ARM code and it allows to store directories). David Pilling's SparkFS is a commercial utility that allows to read but not write PackdDir archives (SparkFS can read most compressed archives and read some, whether on the Acorn or elsewhere).
